Complaining about your coach

I’ve worked closely with most athletic teams at Fredonia, and I’ve yet to find a head coach that athletes won’t complain about.

Yes, it’s possible the coaches here just aren’t very good, but that’s not a logical conclusion. If we hired an entirely new staff, it’s unlikely there would be any more or less complaining. It would probably be about the same.

Tennessee basketball players complained about Pat Summitt all the time. UCLA basketball players complained about John Wooden relentlessly.

Here’s the thing — coaches want athletes to improve, and they want them to win. Athletes, like all human beings, prefer to stay in their comfort zones. Therein lies the tension.

Tension is good.

I tend to worry when athletes don’t complain enough about their coach. Not enough tension.
